Seven Daring Years: Odano Naotake and Akita Ranga, at SUNTORY Museum of Art, Akasaka, Minatoku, Tokyo

16th November 2016 - 9th January, 2017 | SUNTORY Museum of Art, Akasaka, Minatoku, Tokyo
In the mid-Edo period, Odano Naotake (1749-1780), a samurai from Akita, was the central figure in the emergence of a new style of painting, now known as Akita Ranga (Akita Dutch-style painting).
Naotake, who moved to Edo after Hiraga Gennai visited Akita, drew the illustrations for the Kaitai shinsho (New book of anatomy, based on a Dutch translation of German anatomist J.A.Kulmus’s Anatomische Tabellen), the first Western medical textbook to be translated into Japanese.
In a short period, until his death at the age of 32, Naotake created Akita Ranga that incorporated the techniques of linear perspective and shading from Western art.
Akita Ranga paintings, connecting the aesthetics of East and West, continue to fascinate.
This exhibition brings together masterworks by Naotake as well as Akita daimyo Satake Shozan and others associated with the Akita Ranga school to examine the true face of the enigmatic Akita Ranga.
