Owarai Shinji (Ritual of Laughter), at Hiraoka Jinja, Higashi Osaka, Osaka

Owarai Shinji (Ritual of Laughter), at Hiraoka Jinja, Higashi Osaka, Osaka

23rd December, 2017 | Hiraoka Jinja, Higashi Osaka, Osaka
The event sprang from a myth that Shinto deities would laugh out loud to entice sun goddess Amaterasu from Amano Iwato, a rock cave that she hid in. I guess even the gods appreciate a good chuckle now and then.
The ritual starts at 10 a.m. when a Shinto priest guffaws for the gathered crowd.
This prolonged belly laugh will be followed by that of other priests and, of course, visitors. Laughing is contagious, after all. This will be repeated three times, after which a ceremony will take place that involves 20 minutes of laughing in an effort to rid yourself of negativity ahead of the new year.
