Tori-oi Festival at Isegu Shrine, Azuma, Gunma Pref.
14th January, 2018 | at Isegu Shrine, Azuma, Gunma Pref.
The Tori-oi Festival takes place annually on Jan. 14 in an effort to pray for a good harvest and the well-being of local families. Things kick off with a Shinto ritual at Isegu Shrine, west of Nakanojo Station.
Following the ritual, people in happi (festive coats) will parade around 10 floats with taiko (Japanese drums) through the town.
As they march, the pounding of the drums and the accompanying singing from the marchers are meant to drive off any vermin or birds. Things can get loud, so it may be good to have a pair of earplugs on hand just in case. Some visitors will also be asked to take a turn banging the drums.
The event will also include the scattering of mikan (mandarin oranges) at various places in the town as a way to spread luck.
